Iloilo City to Give Cash Aid for Victims of Typhoon Yolanda

The Iloilo City Government will provide financial assistance to families whose houses were damaged by typhoon Yolanda over the weekend. Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said he will request the City Council to pass a supplemental budget intended to help typhoon-affected families, most of them came from coastal barangays battered by strong winds. A cash aid of P5,000 each will be given to families with totally-damaged houses and P2,500 each for the partially damaged residences.

There were 57 houses totally destroyed and 313 partially damaged. There were 97 barangays affected, 5,741 families, 28,705 individuals who went to 153 evacuation centers, according to report of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC). “We must thank God that Iloilo City was spared from the horrible effect of Yolanda. I am inviting everybody to join in a procession at 3pm from Plaza Libertad to Fort San Pedro and right after there will be a thanksgiving mass at 4pm on Friday,” said Mabilog.

The mayor also gave a very good rating to CDRRMC for its preparation and performance during the crisis. The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) was monitoring the situation of evacuees and distributed several sacks of rice, packs of noodles and cartoons of can goods in various evacuation centers. The City Engineer’s Office personnel were also very active in responding to calls to cut falling trees blocking the streets. CDRRMC convened to make the city prepared early for the expected devastation of super typhoon Yolanda as well as closely monitored the impacts during disaster.

Calle Real to become a Public Park

via: kevinspires.wordpress.com
Calle Real is envisioned to become a public park for pedestrians and bikers every weekend nights from Saturday, November 30 to December 28, 2013, in a move to explore the viability of a pedestrianized downtown core.

The proposal was introduced by city councilor Jason Gonzales for a one month test on the temporary closure of the street junctions from JM Basa and Arroyo up to JM Basa and Mapa starting at 5PM to 11:59 PM and all weekends henceforth until December 28, 2013.

The city council has referred the proposal to the committees on tourism and transportation.

Gonzales said the plan would explore the viability of a vision set forth in the 2011-2020 Iloilo Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) in consonance with plans of the city for the revitalization of the central business district and restoration of heritage structures along the street.

Gonzales said that Iloilo City Calle Real can compete with other big cities of the world with its walkable street dotted with heritage structures. Pedestrianization has to be prioritized as well for physical fitness by opening a new public park for walking and site seeing.

At present, 10 heritage structures are already restored along JM Basa street and a walking tour at night will showcase the heritage row as well as for tourism and cultural heritage revival.

The absolutely no smoking new public park will be augmented by a night market in the future, Gonzales said. (PNA)
