Iloilo City now in Top 77 of the New7Wonders Cities

Iloilo City made it to the Top 77 of the New7Wonders Cities campaign in its poll results released Oct. 7. Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said the recognition is a proof of the Ilonggos’ sense of pride of their place by showing their support to promote Iloilo City.

He also thanked netizens who expressed their love and appreciation for the city in a global online voting. “I am enjoining every Ilonggo to continue the support and prayers for our city as we aim to be included in the prestigious list,” said Mabilog.

The voted cities from the qualification phase are eligible for selection by the panel of experts to become part of the 28 official finalists to be known on Oct. 21.
The naming of 77 cities marks the completion of qualification phase of the global election which began March 7, 2012 and during which voters around the world made their choices from more than 300 cities.

The diversity of cities in the long-list is “extraordinarily stimulating as regards the past, present and future of urban life,” said Bernard Weber, founder of New7Wonders.

“Global in its scope, this remarkable New7Wonders long-list reflects the energy and culture of the city at its best. United in their commonalities, and varied in their forms, cities remind us of the possibilities of civilization when, for the first time in history, more than half of the world’s population live in cities,” he added.
The New7Wonders Cities campaign is hoped to generate debate about the challenges cities face — national and international — and how to respond to issues and concerns.
