Gun ban up during Dinagyang Festival 2012

All permits to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR) will be suspended in this city effective January 15 to January 23 following the approval of the gun ban by Police Director-General Nicanor Bartolome.

This was announced by Police Regional Office 6 (PRO 6) director C/Supt. Cipriano E. Querol who sought for the approval of the gun ban upon a request from Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) director S/Supt. Marietto Valerio and concurred by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

With the total gun ban, all law enforcement officers are prohibited to carry their government-issued firearms when off-duty or not in proper uniform.

The civilian gun holders are also warned not to bring their firearms to that effect.

"Dinagyang Festival is a premier tourism event in the city and one of the famous festivities in the country. Hence, it is expected that big number of local and foreign tourists, devotees and revelers will come and enjoy the celebration and we are mandated to ensure their safety," he said.

Mabilog added that that the suspension of PTCFOR is also aimed at reducing crimes, particularly crimes are perpetrated with the use of firearms.

Querol said violators of the gun ban will be charged for illegal possession of firearms and, for civilian gun holders, revocation of their license to possess the firearm/s will also be imposed.

Querol added that the gun ban also includes the prohibition of carrying of deadly weapons.

“The suspension of PTCFOR this Dinagyang Festival is similar to that of the total gun ban during the past elections," he said. (PNA)
