2 original Sto. Nino images in PHIL to meet in Dinagyang 2012

Negotiations are ongoing over the proposed meeting of the two oldest and original images of Santo Niño in the country to add color to the 2012 Dinagyang Festival slated January 20 to 22.

This was confirmed by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog who presided over the meeting of the Dinagyang Festival Board Monday afternoon.

Dubbed as “Pagtabu” the meeting of two images was proposed in time for the arrival of the Santo Niño de Cebu on January 19 to be welcomed by the Santo Niño de Arevalo at the Iloilo Fort San Pedro.

The carriage of the Santo Niño de Arevalo will lead the procession to be followed by Santo Niño de Cebu towards the San Jose Parish Church. Thereafter the Santo Niño de Arevalo returns to the Arevalo Church.

The country has three original images of the Holy Child Jesus; the oldest was found in Cebu in 1565 while the other image that was found in 1572 is in Tondo Church. The last of the three oldest and original images is at the Arevalo Parish.

Apart from the “Pagtabu” the Fluvial Procession serves as one of the major activities of the Liturgical Committee chaired by San Jose Parish Priest, Fr. Achiles Secio, OSA.

This year some 20 pump boats are expected to participate in the procession with the image of Santo Niño on board the decorated lead banca. It will take off from the Fort San Pedro and will dock at the Aduana Area.

A foot procession from the Aduana to the Freedom Grandstand follows thereafter the image returns to the San Jose Parish Church. (PNA)
